Promoting sustainable practices in Indian musical instruments.

our history

Founded by S. Shingara Singh, Calcutta Musical Industries has deep roots in the world of Indian musical instruments. S. Shingara Singh began his journey in Lahore, Pakistan, where he worked in a musical instrument shop. After moving to India post-partition, he started selling Tumbi strings from a small street-side shop in Chora Bazaar, Ludhiana. This humble shop later grew into Mohan Music House, named after his son, S. Mohan Singh, and became one of the first musical instrument shops in North India following India’s independence.

From these modest beginnings, S. Shingara Singh ventured into Calcutta Musical, at a time when Calcutta was a major hub for instrument production and export in India. Known as the “House of Music,” Calcutta was the inspiration for the name. The first Calcutta Musical shop opened in Jalandhar, Punjab, and was soon followed by another in Ludhiana, Punjab. To ensure the highest quality craftsmanship, S. Shingara Singh also set up a factory in Ludhiana for in-house production of instruments, further cementing the company's reputation for quality and authenticity.

Under the guidance of S. Mohan Singh, the company experienced significant growth, expanding both its product offerings and distribution network. His leadership helped position Calcutta Musical Industries as a trusted name in the Indian musical instrument industry. He also took the initiative to prepare the next generation to carry the legacy forward.

Currently, the business is led by S. Tejinder Singh alongside his sons, who have taken the helm of daily operations. Together, they are focused on expanding the company’s reach into global markets, including North America, Europe, and beyond. With each new generation, Calcutta Musical Industries has continued to evolve, while staying true to its commitment to quality craftsmanship and its dedication to Indian classical music.

Calcutta Musical Industries is committed to not only preserving the traditions of Indian music but also ensuring that its production methods are in harmony with the environment. The company has taken steps to incorporate eco-friendly materials into its instruments and has implemented sustainable practices in its manufacturing process. By supporting local artisans and sourcing materials responsibly, Calcutta Musical Industries aims to maintain its legacy while reducing its environmental impact.

Looking ahead, the company’s vision extends beyond its current offerings. Plans are in place to expand the product line to meet the evolving needs of musicians around the world, while staying true to the rich heritage of Indian classical music. Additionally, Calcutta Musical Industries seeks to collaborate with international artists and institutions to promote Indian music on a global scale. By fostering these connections and continuing to innovate, the company is dedicated to shaping the future of Indian musical instruments while honoring its proud legacy.

Calcutta Musical Industries stands poised for growth, blending tradition with innovation, and staying committed to the values that have driven the brand for generations.
